9:15 am – 11:30 am
Jesuit Fr. James Martin, will lead us in considering how we can build bridges of love and respect to our brothers and sisters who identify as LGBT.
Rev. James Martin, S.J. is editor-at-large of America Magazine and consultor for the Vatican’s Secretariat for Communication. He will speak on the topic of his book, Building A Bridge. Martin uses the image of a two-way bridge to enable LGBT Catholics and the Church to come together in a call to end the “us” versus “them” mentality. Turning to the Catechism, he draws on the three criteria at the heart of Christian ministry–“respect, compassion, and sensitivity”–as a model for how the Catholic Church should relate to the LGBT community. Father Martin’s book has the ecclesiastical approval of his superiors and the endorsement of several cardinals and bishops. He was asked by the Vatican to speak on this same topic at the World Meeting of Families in Dublin.
The morning will begin at 9:15 AM and will conclude in time for the 11:30 AM Abbey Mass.
